June 2008
What's Happening in the Bookstore
June 6th was First Friday in Golden and Knapweed performed at the store. With a fiddle, upright bass, guitar, mandolin and sweet harmonies, these guys dazzled the crowd, which was large and appreciative. We hope to have them back.
We've had people in the store this week talking poetry. Books that were mentioned were The Collected Poems of Robert Creeley 1945 to 2005, a Joseph Hutchison book from 1992, House of Mirrors and State of Exile by Uruguayan, Cristina Peri Rossi.
Sunday, a gang of about 20 Vespa riders blew into town, backed their scooters in at the Buffalo Rose and mingled with the Harley dudes. It was quite a sight.
Book Signings
Steven Vannoy ( The 10 Greatest Gifts I Give my Children and
Stomp the Elephant in the Office) is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, June 26.
THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED.
On July 8th, local author Todd Lowther will sign copies of his book,
Castle Rock and the Ku Klux Klan here at Clear Creek Books.
June Book Club - June
23rd
The Clear Creek book club is growing, with new members showing up each month. This
month's book is Special Topics in Calamity Physics by Marisha Pessl. If you can read the book by June 23rd at 6:30 you are more than welcome.
It's a pretty opinionated group.
Book Review by CCB Customer Roy Hurley
If you're a sucker ( sa'ch u'r) for etymology, you'll really dig ( tuig ) the book by Daniel Cassidy, "HOW THE IRISH INVENTED SLANG (the secret language of the crossroads)". This book is not surprisingly a winner of the American Book Award, and is written in a very charming, appealing style. You'll find many familiar expressions, such as "hot diggity dog" ( a'rd-iachtach-tach) or "dude" (du'd). Some, if not most, are of an older generation, but still a few remain in use, such as "jazz" , and "poker". Insights into "The Gangs Of New York" are found and you may get a peek beyond the mists of irish history. Holy Moly (moladh), you may even expand your vocabulary.
Staff picks for June:
Brother, I'm Dying by Edwidge Danticat, Coltrane, The Story of a Sound by Ben Ratliff,
When You Are Engulfed In Flames by David Sedaris and
Passing by Nella Larson.
